Due to an ongoing dispute between the 3 States involved in the Sardar Sarovar project regarding the increase of the dam height and the distribution of water between them, the central government formed the Narmada Water Dispute Tribunal (NWDT) under the interstate Water Disputes Act in 1969.

The NWDT published its Award in 1979. It fixed the final height of the dam at 138.68 meters, defined the distribution of benefits and percentage of costs of the project and the liability for and standards of rehabilitation of oustees.
