Bharuch: The Sardar Sarovar Dam over Narmada river is all set to overflow Saturday early morning following heavy inflow of water from the upper catchment areas in neighbouring state of Madhya Pradesh.

On Friday evening, the water in the dam was 121.23m as against the rule level of 121.92 when the dam overflows. According to superintendent engineer of Sardar Sarovar Dam, R N Kanungo, the water was steadily rising.

“The water level in the dam is rising by 5cm every hour because of inflow of 1.65 lakh cusecs water from the catchment area. Whereas, the outflow is nearly 60,000 cusecs,” Kanungo said. “The dam is likely to overflow around 2am on Saturday,” he added.
Last time the dam overflowed was in August 2014 following heavy rains in Madhya Pradesh.
Dam authorities said that they were expecting heavy rush of tourists from Saturday afternoon. They have made adequate security arrangements to handle the rush over the next couple of days.
