The Times Of india, June 20 2017, Bhopal: After the Narmada control authority (NCA) cleared the final raising of Sardar Sarovar Dam (SSD) by lowering of gates and impounding of water in the reservoir, there is a furore in Narmada valley.

Protests have been taking place in the districts of Dhar, Badwani, Alirajpur and Khargone.

On Monday, people from Moolgaon and Jargawan in Badwani district protested before an additional district magistrate Mahesh Badole who was accompanied by revenue department officials and a large number of cops.

Suresh Kanere and Ramesh, a Bhilala tribe man from Jargawan village wanted to know about their rehabilitation sites.

“Show us where would we live after submergence”, they asked.

Many more people present on the spot raised similar questions.

Medha Patkar of Narmada Bachao Andolan said, “The level of falsehood involved in the decision taken by NCA on the closure of Sardar Sarovar gates is unprecedented.”

Joint director of Narmada Valley Development Authority( NVDA) AK Khare said, “gates are being closed after substantial compliance of the Supreme Court orders”. He said 663 out of 681 people have been given Rs 60 lakh compensation amount while 835 people out of 942 have been given Rs 15 lakh each. He said that work for relief and rehabilitation is on at “war footing”.

The state government machinery works overtime in the four districts of Dhar, Alirajpur, Badwani and Khargone where more than 40,000 hectares of land including 13,385 hectares of forest is going to be submerged once the water collects in the huge reservoir.

Sources said that earlier, the gates were scheduled to be closed down by July 31. But after NCA nod, the gates were closed down almost 45 days in advance.

Medha Patkar said the number of affected families is more than 45,000 and the whole town of Dharampuri has been denied the compensation.

She feared forceful eviction of the people and said that the NBA will continue fight for the rights .
