The Hitvada, Aug 25 2016, Madhya Pradesh: Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) leader, Medha Patkar has levelled allegations of huge corruption in the rehabilitation of displaced people from Sardar Sarovar dam catchment area. It may be noted that the Justice Shravan Shankar Jha Commission, after a long investigation of seven years, filed the report in 2016 before the High Court.
She was addressing the press conference after the hearing in the case related to Sardar Sarovar habitants before the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
She alleged that State Government and Narmada Valley Development Authority (NVDA) have made all efforts that the report does not reach the High Court. They obtained stay on order of High Court dated February 16, 2016 from the Supreme Court and the report came in hands of Chief Secretary. Now, as per orders, the Chief Secretary that is State Government has to submit the action taken report before the Supreme Court along with providing the report to the petitioner Narmada Bachao Andolan that could not be done yet.
NBA leader, Medha Patkar referring to the investigation of sale of forged sale letters and investigation of rehabilitation sites by the Justice Shravan Shankar Jha in the Sardar Sarovar Project related case, said that the fake property registration is the result of wrong policy for Special Rehabilitation Grant. The Government does not have sufficient irrigable land near the places selected for rehabilitation of Sardar Sarovar displaced. She added that, due to this wrong policy, the orders of the Supreme Court, allowing better life for the affected families and persons also proved ineffective. As per the Jha Commission report, over 1,500 registries are fake. The Commission has identified 186 middlemen involved in sale of fake sale letters and property registration and had share in the profits. The officials posted for Land Acquisition and Rehabilitation even not checked the authenticity of the sale letters. In the process, rules were violated before making payments. She added that, they have appealed the Madhya Pradesh High Court to set up a special investigation team or to hand over the case to the CBI to investigate the corruption in rehabilitation of people. She said, if assessed, the corruption in this would be bigger than the Vyapam scam in Madhya Pradesh.
